Worst Case Analysis of Max-Regret, Greedy and Other Heuristics for Multidimensional Assignment and Traveling Salesman Problems

چکیده
Optimization heuristics are often compared with each other to determine which one performs best by means of worst-case performance ratio reflecting the quality of returned solution in the worst case. The domination number is a complement parameter indicating the quality of the heuristic in hand by determining how many feasible solutions are dominated by the heuristic solution. We prove that the MaxRegret heuristic introduced by Balas and Saltzman (1991) finds the unique worst possible solution for some instances of the s-dimensional (s ≥ 3) assignment and asymmetric traveling salesman problems of each possible size. We show that the Triple Interchange heuristic (for s = 3) also introduced by Balas and Saltzman and two new heuristics (Part and Recursive Opt Matching) have factorial domination numbers for the s-dimensional (s ≥ 3) assignment problem.

New Heuristic Algorithms for Solving Single-Vehicle and Multi-Vehicle Generalized Traveling Salesman Problems (GTSP)
Among numerous NP-hard problems, the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) has been one of the most explored, yet unknown one. Even a minor modification changes the problem’s status, calling for a different solution. The Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (GTSP)expands the TSP to a much more complicated form, replacing single nodes with a group or cluster of nodes, where the objective is to fi...
متن کاملGreedy-type resistance of combinatorial problems
This paper gives a sufficient condition for a combinatorial problem to be greedy-type-resistant, i.e. such that, on some instances of the problem, any greedy-type algorithm will output the unique worst possible solution. The condition is used to show that the Equipartition, the k-Clique, the Asymmetric Traveling Salesman, the Hamiltonian Path, the Min-Max Matching, and the Assignment Problems a...
متن کاملA New Rank Based Version of theAnt System - A Computational Study
The ant system is a new meta-heuristic for hard combinatorial optimization problems. It is a population-based approach that uses exploitation of positive feedback as well as greedy search. It was rst proposed for tackling the well known Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), but has been also successfully applied to problems such as quadratic assignment, job-shop scheduling, vehicle routing and grap...
متن کاملImproving the performance of greedy heuristics for TSPs using tolerances
In this paper we introduce three greedy algorithms for the traveling salesman problem. These algorithms are unique in that they use arc tolerances, rather than arc weights, to decide whether or not to include an arc in a solution. We report extensive computational experiments on benchmark instances that clearly demonstrate that our tolerance-based algorithms outperform their weight-based counte...
متن کاملAn Approach for Solving Traveling Salesman Problem
In this paper, we introduce a new approach for solving the traveling salesman problems (TSP) and provide a solution algorithm for a variant of this problem. The concept of the proposed method is based on the Hungarian algorithm, which has been used to solve an assignment problem for reaching an optimal solution. We introduced a new fittest criterion for crossing over such problems, and illu...
